It all started in 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand while serving at Nightlight International’s children’s center. While there, Janie’s eyes were opened to the trauma of trafficking, and how it impacts not just the survivor, but the families as well. After she and Eric were married in 2011, they began to explore what human trafficking looks like in the states. In 2016, Eric and Janie were instrumental in launching the Salina Area Coalition for Trafficked Persons (SACTP) in Salina, Kansas. This coalition was an inter-agency collaboration which focused on education and linking arms together so that victims were being identified and provided the services they needed. They helped shed light on how social media plays a role in child sex trafficking when they hosted Russ Tuttle from the Stop Trafficking Project. Seeing the need for a formal organization, Shelter and Rain was officially founded as a non-profit in September, 2017. They presented on the Role of Family in the Recovery of Human Trafficking Survivors in 2019. Shelter and Rain has been involved in many anti-trafficking initiatives across the US including helping to open a recovery home on the Central Coast of California. They are connected to the Anti-trafficking Cause Network which hosts monthly calls. Their mission includes coming alongside children in foster care, and equipping churches with trauma informed trainings. Shelter and Rain networks within Wichita, Kansas to mentor and provide restorative resources for survivors.
