Christmas is all about the unexpected. It is often not as predictable as we would like it to be. Perhaps you are experiencing anticipation or maybe even anxiety and unrest as the holiday approaches. It may come on the heels of an unexpected year or few years. Perhaps you long to lean into the wonder of Christmas as the child you once were, but feel the tension inside. Life is often not as we expect and yet beauty is laced within the unknown. I think we forget that when Mary held Jesus in her arms for the first time, she was miles from home surrounded by difficult circumstances. Mary had no idea what this new life as a mother would hold. She kept catching glimpses as the shepherds came after the appearance of heavenly beings, then the wise men show up after having followed prophetic writings about a significant astronomical event. She had no idea of the agony she herself would have to go through as he grew. There was so much unknown. All she had was His infant presence. And she chose in that moment to be in the moment, to take it all in. I don’t know how many of you are in a season of unknown right now. Perhaps you have been waiting for a miracle, a promise, perhaps you catch glimpses of it but for the most part, you are simply experiencing life day to day. Life may not be turning out as you expected. This Christmas there is an invitation to enter into the ordinary and the sacred. You and I are being beckoned to hold space for those things we long for and also the unknown of if and when they will happen. If this last year was different than you expected and you wonder what the future holds, I want to encourage you to simply take the gift you have in today. To welcome it with wonder. To hold those close who are near. Mary held a tiny baby in distant town, in an unknown stable, surrounded by those she didn’t know. And yet, in that moment she held LOVE. May you and I embrace LOVE this Christmas amidst our own unexpected and unknowns.

Do you know a survivor of sexual exploitation or trauma who is looking for support and encouragement on her healing journey? This fall we will be starting a survivor inner healing group that will meet in person for 12 weeks! Our first session we will be going through the chapters of Courageous and Free - Journey to Inner Healing. This is a faith based study and written from a trauma informed perspective. We are excited as we know many survivors are in our community and yet feeling alone and disconnected. If you would like to be involved by becoming a mentor or helping lead these groups, we would love to hear from you!
